Want to combine your visit to the castle or the park with other activities in the area? Here are some suggestions.
De Haar Estate
This enormous estate, lying just outside and all around the premisses of De Haar Castle, is owned by Natuurmonumenten (an large Dutch organisation for nature conservation). Here you can enjoy the countryside by bike or on foot. Entrance is free.
Haarzuilens
Just outside the park lies a tiny pittoresque village. The village of Haarzuilens used to lie directly next to the castle (in what is now the Roman Garden), but when baron Etienne had the castle rebuilt, the workers tore down the entire village and rebuilt it just a kilometer away! You can still see the connection between De Haar Castle and Haarzuilens: all the houses have red and white shutters, just like the castle.
From the castle to Haarzuilens it is a 20 minute walk (turn right when you leave the main gate, the road is accessible for bikes and pedestrians only). In the village you can have a look at the Brink (the village square) or have a drink at the outside terras of Restaurant De Vier Balken of 't Wapen van Haarzuylen.
If you want to see more of the surrounding area or entertain foreign guests, we suggest a ride on the Haarse trekkertram (tractor train) or renting a bike.
Hotels in the area
Staying overnight is not possible in Haarzuilens, but nearby is the enchanting mini camping and bed & breakfast Hazenveld Farm, or you can stay at Hotel Het Wapen van Harmelen.
